    Blog & Freebies!

Hi and welcome to Humble Oak Co!

You're probably here for the freebies - You're in the right place.

As soon as I started playing mahjong (not really that long ago!), my kids were interested in playing as well. Now, as our house fills with more and more mahjong tiles, racks, and accessories, my kids are more interested than ever in learning how to play.

I'm not going to lie- we teach our kids almost everything, and teaching kids to play mahjong seems pretty daunting. So I decided to sit down and create a freebie "cheat sheet" for parents who love to play games with their families. If you are just learning mahjong and want to play with your kids - GREAT! This should help, but please note, this is in NO way as comprehensive as American Mahjong that is recently taking the world by storm.

This "family version" uses 8 tiles to make a hand instead of the 14 used in American Mahjong. If you're already an experienced player and just need to simplify the game for your kids, you'll see that this guide is extremely simple and hopefully helps.

In the printout, I have included simple instructions for setup and dealing, as well as game instructions. I have included visual "playing cards" for kids who are really eager to learn but might need visual aids. I designed each card showing what the hands would look like with our tiles (<3) and one that is totally generic and can be used for any tiles you might have on hand.

While we love the tiles, accessories, mats - what we love most is that mahjong brings people together and we always want to include our children when we can.

Hopefully this guide is helpful to you! If you have any feedback please let me know. This is not meant to be a comprehensive guide to playing American Mahjong, it is our way of setting up some "house rules" with our family, and lay a foundation for what we have on hand to include our kids in the game we love!
